Oregon Trail past Register Cliffs

Oregon Trail past Register Cliffs

Along the North Platte River, Register Cliffs, is where hundreds of Oregon Trail travlers carved their name and date into the soft sandstone cliffs. This dirt road, leading to the signature cliffs, follows the same course along the NF of the Platte, that the wagon trains would have followed.

I had a wonderful trip from Washington State to Texas. I visited with my Aunt in Texas, and helped her a bit with a move, then had a good visit with my Mom in Kansas. Now I was heading back home.

I had two places I had never been before (and a road or two I had never driven), that I wanted to see on the way back. I wanted to visit the Oregon Trail wagon ruts near Guernsey, Wyoming and then drive back road highway 270 from Guernsey to Devils Tower. I had come close on previous trips, but never had seen Devils Tower. I enjoyed the tower and the wonderful wildlife and landscape around it, very much.

After Devils Tower, I pretty much put the old truck on “automatic pilot” and took the Interstate back home, stopping at a Cracker Barrel restaurant for a big country meal in Missoula, Montana - - as a celebratory punctuation mark, to a great two week road trip.

Class 500 Cash Register

Class 500 Cash Register

The Class 500 cash registers (1908-1916) were the largest ones made by the National Cash Register Company. This brass register came with eight drawers, which meant that different store clerks could use it at the same time. It was also the most expensive machine produced at the time, with prices ranging from $315 to $555.

This particular cash register was commissioned in 1910 and expressly built for the A. McMillan Jewelry store located at 82 Sparks Street. The store on Ottawa's main commercial strip was noted to have the best assorted stock of jewelry in Canada - making it unfortunately very prone to theft, including a sensational daylight diamond robbery in 1909 and some twenty years earlier a theft (which involved a fake priest) of several watches.

This cash register is in the care of the Bytown Museum in Ottawa.

,,,,,,,The Culprit,,,,,,,,,,A Dog Story,,,,,,,

Like to start off by thanking everyone that has stopped by in the last week to view my photos. Especially those of you that have left messages and your on going support.

Had an emergency that took me off line for some time which I'll get to soon.

First, this is one of Thailand hottest months as we have three seasons.
Hot, Hotter and Hottest !! April being the Hottest. Temps ranging from 38C up to 42C during the day with nights not being much different.
An occasional thunder and lightening storm will drift through but gives very little relief from the on going heat.

Anyway back to the emergency.
Might have been 5 or 6 days ago +or- I had just gone to bed at midnight, dropped off into a deep sleep.

Woke up not knowing what time it was but felt like my head was foggy and body was not responding to the brain which was not responding to anything.

I could hear a thump thump whack whack but still it did not register until I felt a wet little nose trying it's best to poke my arm that was hanging over the side of the bed.

I looked down and there was the Little Worm poking and poking my arm, my eyes looked at the clock next to my head and it said 1:37AM !!.

Oh Man, figured she had to go pee and wanted out which is not like her at all.
As I sat up rubbing my eyes a feeling went through me that something was different but couldn't pick it up.

The Worm ran into the other room and then back to the bed with a sound of urgency so I figured she really need to go out.
Just as I slung my legs over the side it dawned on me there was no fans running. All 7 fans stood still with out a single blade moving. The moon gave me some light so moving around is no problem but still The Worm seemed to have a problem.
She continued to zip back and forth from one room back to the bed with excitement in her movements.

One of the main doors leading out is right next to the computer station so I figured she was still wanting to go out.

The second I entered the room a smell hit my nose, "Burning Plastic !!
I could see sparks and a short flame along with black smoke coming out of the top of the monitor. In one big leap I grabbed all the wires and started pulling them out, including the computer wires.
Pulled the desk away from the window where curtains hung only inches away from the flames and scoped up all papers laying on the desk.
Everything came to a stop except for the lingering trail of smoke from the monitor.
Now I'm wide awake on full alert, checking and rechecking any and all wires connected to the stereo and computer.
Standing there shacking my head in disbelief as to what had just happened and how close it had come to major disaster.
Little Worm is sitting looking up at me with her tail still going and a slight smile as if to say something to me.
Getting down on all fours it was only right to let her lick my ears as she likes to do when she is thrilled with her self.
I was very thrilled with her too....;-)

Went and hit the breakers and power came back producing a waft of air from the fans.
Opened the glass doors, readjusted the fans and started blowing the smoke outside.

So what happened ?, Why did this happen? I wasn't sure but I was defiantly going to find out !

First thing in the morning I was off with monitor to one of my relatives computer shops. Told his main man, who is from Bulgaria and a wizz with this stuff, what had happened. He put his nose to the top vents and said, " Hmm doesn't look good !"
We started taking the monitor apart piece by piece with a slow methodical
pace of a brain surgeon.
When we got to circuit board compartment you could see black soot flashed on the aluminum casing.

The board it's self was covered in black soot and had a hole blown right through it the size of a shirt button.
As we continued to pop it completely open a hard black scorched lizard body fell out onto the counter top.
Like the circuit board the lizard too had a hole blown through his body only much bigger.
Again my friend said " Looks Bad !"
He also said let me play with it and see what I can do but don't have any hope of it being repairable.
Well a couple of days latter he had repaired it and it seems to work just fine. Problem was now in the computer it's self.
Took us a couple of days to repair some damage that been done to it as well.
Surprising we did recover all of the hard drive that had been effected and now once again I'm up and running.

And the Worm has earned her spot under my computer desk for her nest.
I put an old shirt under the desk where
my feet go and she proudly did her clock wise circles and the layed down.
Now on occasion I feel a little wet tongue cleaning my toes and the tail hitting the side of the desk.
As far as Mr WeeNee, he could care less, he is sacked out on the porch and not into all the drama.

As far as the picture goes, I took it a few years back with a D50, Sigma 105 2.8 macro lens.
A bunch of lizard eggs were inside a land line phone making it impos

oh no!

oh no!

So as most of you know, I dropped my D50 when we went to Sac and my command dial stopped working. Outside of the D700, Nikon has no announcements for a higher end consumer body, at least until September 3. Considering my only lens is a Sigma 30mm 1.4, I optioned both Canon and Nikon bodies when shopping for a temp(or complete replacement). To be completely honest, the only thing I'll really want from a D90(or whatever the D80 successor will be named) is even cleaner high ISOs. D50 and XT sensors are clean enough for me @ ISO 1600 so I figured I don't really need the upgrade. Sigma makes the great 30mm1 .4 in both mounts(cheaper in Canon too), and I'd probably get one of the wide to mid 2.8 zooms by Sigma or Tamron, which is in both mounts also(again cheaper in Canon, stupid F mount). HOWEVER, I've hated how the consumer Canons felt in my hands(my aunt's 5D is awesome though) and I hate the single command dial placement. All the other complaints I've had are all very minor things I can probably grow to live with(Hey I use windows).

This came up on craigslist for $300, body, extra battery, grip and remote. I'm probably never gonna use the kit lens after tomorrow, but the grip and remote are handy. Good deal so I drove to hayward and picked it up. Now I need to dump my Nikon stuff, pick up a Sigma 30mm 1.4, wide to mid 2.8 zoom, and MAYBE a 50mm 1.4 just because I miss the tighter shots it can give me at a show. I'm loving the grip. It makes the camera a lot better to hold regularly, and I love the being able to hold it in portrait.

On spring

On spring

Oh, I'm gonna fry you up. I've got your eggs and bacon right here, baby!

Her voice was terse with another of the many threats she'd made today. I walked to the end of my house quietly and tilted my head around the corner so I could watch her unobserved.

Mama Rose, one hand gloved and the other bare, leaned over my bed of Irises, pulling at a weed while striking it with an evil looking machete.

Not my machete. She'd brought it from home. It's her favorite tool. When I could coax her to put it down, she'd help me pull weeds from the flower bed in front, replacing the weeds with cypress mulch. Unlike me, yard work was something she'd rather do than just about anything. At the end of our first day together, she left her machete and work shoes, so in her words, she'd have to come back for them tomorrow.

She called the next morning at 7:30. She'd been up since 6. Her daughter and I say she's crazy. It's the good crazy though, not Power-of-Attorney crazy.

She lends just the right spirit to spring yard work. I love spring and I'll tell you why. There's a crazy kind of risk in it.

When I started the working in the yard earlier in the week, I was going solo. It was warm outside and sunny. I burned fallen limbs, I cut grass and I pulled honeysuckle vines. When I came inside that night, I had a light sunburn. I invited Mama Rose over the next day because I felt behind the season already and knew I needed help.

The next day, the picture changed. The skies were overcast. A light drizzle coated my burn pile. But the weather was fine for listening to stories from my companion.

I always say, don't tell me not to do something, just tell me why I shouldn't do it.

I played along. Don't do it because your mother told you not to and you'd get a whipping.

Shoo. A whipping only lasts a minute. Did I ever tell you how I started a fire with a match and a rock?

And the next day the picture had changed again. Tornadoes came through during the night, passing just south of us but still setting off the county warning sirens. I savored my coffee the next morning, waiting for the weather to clear. Finally, I drove through the fog to pick up Mama Rose again.

Look how many churches there are between your house and ours. Don't you know people just keep building all these churches to have more ways to make money off Our Lord? It's just disgusting.

When Mama Rose's New Orleans accent wraps around this word, I believe even those who don't understand English can get the meaning from her inflection.

Three days. Three kinds of weather. By Friday, I realized my yard work wasn't going to be finished by the end of my vacation. And I realized I wasn't behind the season at all.

I also learned that if I gave Mama Rose cuttings from my flower beds, she'd have something to plant at her house, and I'd get a day off.

There are plenty of lessons to take from spring. They repeat every year and every year they feel new because I've changed from this time last year.

First, I hear change is inevitable. People can pretend that change doesn't happen, but they are just denying the reality of spring, which comes each year with wind and sun and tantalizing activity. My yard is in bad shape because I ignored it two springs in a row. Ignoring it didn't stop spring's invitation from reaching me, nor did it stop weeds from overtaking my flowers. This week I tugged weeds out of my yard, revealing all the lovely flowers underneath. I could almost hear them beginning to breathe again.

Change is dirty. I can't pull weeds or dig soil without getting dirty. In fact, digging is best done when it's been raining, making the ground soft enough to release the weeds and soft enough to mess up my shoes. Participating in spring means making messes and cleaning them up. Not getting dirty means letting messes creep up unplanned but never quite unexpected. You can retreat from that, or you can get in the thick of things. It's okay to choose retreat sometimes. I've chosen it in the past. But the task isn't mysterious or insurmountable. Pull the weeds and toss them out. Leave the rest.

Spring also teaches me that the right tools can make a difference. Recently a friend did repairs for me and in the process put a slash in the finger of his pigskin gloves. We didn't throw them away and after he left I found them tucked away in a utility drawer. I'd never worn pigskin before, but I tried them this week, and I have to tell you, they are the most comfortable gloves I've ever worn. They saved me blisters from the rake and cuts from the thorn bushes. I'd have never justified the expense of fancy gloves for garden work if my friend hadn't left the pair. That's a good friend.

Which is another thing about spring, if only for this year's lesson. I learned that accepting help from friends enriches me in ways pride can't. It may go against my upbringing to ask for help cleaning up a mess I made through my own neglect, bu

[84:365] Proud to Be An American

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. And to the republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Favorite Flickr Friends theme Thankful Thursday - thankful for my freedom =) thankful that i'm American. thankful that i can live in a country where i can dress how i want, and go to a Catholic school, and say what i want, and be me.

Today was an alright day. We're done learning stuff in Bio, because our final exam for that is next Thursday. UGH i'm dreading that...i have to start studying this week. Didn't finish my English paper last night, so i got to class and had to go up to the library and finish it really quickly and then turn it in for revisions. Then i took my last Spanish verb quiz of the year, and i hopefully did alright...Haha. Ugh then after school was softball practice, and lucky me, no one told me practice was at 4:00 instead of the 3:30 usual, so i get to the field at 3:10, and i'm the ONLY one there. Not even my younger sister came. And she's been driving me absolutely NUTS lately, thinking she's always better than me and hanging out and being all buddy-buddy with my ex-best friends. It just drives me insane. So i call her, asking where she is, and shes like "Ohh, we're downtown and we're gonna go to 7-11 and get slurpees and then we'll be there." So as soon as i hang up i start crying. No one thinks to invite me to go downtown with the whole team, and my own sister doesn't even let me in on the loop. I feel so freaking out of place in this school. Like no one really wants me around. I absolutely hate it. I want to get out so bad...just 2 more weeks. Believe me, i'm counting the hours...
